Ios is a beautiful Island located in the heart of the Aegean Sea. Like its neighbouring islets, it is home to typical Greek architecture evident in the picturesque whitewashed town of Chora. Despite its location just north of Santorini, Ios doesn’t have black sand beaches, and instead boasts gorgeous stretches of golden sand. With a combination of stunning scenery, history, and a vibrant nightlife, this island has become a popular tourist destination.
Ios is known for attracting youth, couples and island hoppers however the island also appeals to history lovers too. The tomb of the epic poet Homer can be found here. There are many boat trips available, that will take you to several of the best beaches on the island. Manganari beach is the perfect place to go snorkelling as its turquoise water is thriving with marine life.
An Ios holiday is perfect for every traveller. Homer’s burial site is an excellent visit for those on historical retreats, while the tranquil beaches entice couples seeking a relaxing holiday. The beaches of Ios are beautiful thanks to their white and golden sands. Manganari beach is a popular choice with its warm waters, unspoilt sands and relaxing atmosphere. You can hire sunbeds with umbrellas and there’s also a family-run taverna nearby for refreshments.

Every May Ios hosts the Homeria festival which is held in honour of the epic poet Homer. During a period of three days, exciting events take place such as athletic games, workshops and exhibitions. Concerts and plays are also performed at the theatre of Odysseas Elytis.
During June to August the island reaches temperatures of 29 degrees – perfect for those searching for a warmer climate. Partygoers tend to flock to the island during July and August so if you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere, June and September are great times to go. There is a cool breeze at this time of year, ideal for sunbathing and sightseeing.

There is no airport on the island of Ios, however the ferry from Santorini takes just 1 hour. Many tourists opt to spend some time in Athens and take the ferry to Ios from Piraeus Port, this takes roughly 4 hours. Hiring a car is recommended for travelling around the Island as there are many steep hills that can't be avoided. However, don’t worry if you can't drive as there is a frequent bus service that is very affordable.
