Virginia's Trip to La Rochelle

By Virginia Warren

Virginia La Rochelle Macro

La Rochelle is a city on the west coast of France and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, a part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Location

I flew with Aer Lingus from Dublin to Malaga, a direct flight that took about three hours. The flight was comfortable and smooth, and I enjoyed the views of the Mediterranean Sea as we approached the coast. I arrived in Malaga around noon, and took a taxi to Calahonda, which cost about 40 euros and took about 30 minutes. My friend lives in a cosy apartment overlooking the sea, with a spacious balcony where we had breakfast every morning.

What I Loved

Île de Ré, a stunning island off the Atlantic coast of France, is celebrated for its charming villages, sandy beaches, delectable seafood, and extensive cycle paths. Renting a bike allows you to explore the island, visit picturesque villages, enjoy sandy beaches like Plage de la Conche des Baleines, Plage de Gros Jonc, and Plage de Trousse Chemise, savor fresh seafood, and peruse local markets. The island offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural exploration, and culinary delights.

Activities & Places to See

  • Wander around the historic Old Port, surrounded by picturesque buildings, vibrant cafes, and bustling markets. Enjoy the maritime atmosphere and perhaps take a boat trip to nearby islands.
  • Discover a diverse marine world at the acclaimed La Rochelle Aquarium. Explore fascinating exhibits showcasing marine life, including sharks, sea turtles, and colorful coral reefs.
  • Take a leisurely walk through the charming Old Town with its narrow streets, medieval architecture, and timber-framed houses. Don't miss the iconic Towers of La Rochelle, such as the Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Tour de la Chaîne, offering panoramic views of the city and the sea.

Beaches

La Rochelle offers a variety of beaches, each with its unique charm. The Plage de la Concurrence is a centrally located sandy beach near the Old Port, providing a convenient spot to relax and enjoy the coastal atmosphere. For those seeking a more expansive coastal experience, the Plage des Minimes is a popular choice with its long sandy stretch, water sports facilities, and vibrant promenade. Additionally, the Plage de Chef de Baie offers a tranquil setting with golden sands, ideal for a peaceful seaside retreat.
