Vanessa's Trip to Asturias

Vanessas Trip To Asturias Macro

Asturias, officially known as the Principality of Asturias, is a breathtaking autonomous community in northwest Spain famed for its dramatic landscapes, rugged coastlines, and deeply rooted Celtic heritage. Coined Spain's Natural Paradise, this region serves as a stark, emerald-green contrast to the arid plains typically associated with southern Spain. During my time here, the main cities I visited was Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles. Aer Lingus have a direct flight to Oviedo every Saturday and Tuesday from Dublin, with a flight time of around 1 hour and 40 minutes.

What I Loved

One of my favourite sights that I saw was the Sanctuary of Covadonga, located in the heart of the dramatic Picos de Europa National Park in eastern Asturias. It is one of the most spiritually, historically, and visually spectacular sites in Spain, completely carved into a towering limestone cliffside.

Places to See

  • Visit Picos de Europa to see the dramatic mountains & Lagos de Covadonga.
  • Make a stop in Cudillero, a colourful cliffside fishing village filled with charm.
  • Soak up the sun on some of the region's beaches & take in the rugged coastline.
  • Take in the history of Oviedo & learn all about its cider culture.
  • For a lively seaside city with great food, head to Gijon.
  • Don't miss a visit to Covadonga Sanctuary!

Activities

Asturias is a hidden gem filled with charming areas and lively cities waiting to be explored. Gijón, the energetic coastal powerhouse, features wide sandy beaches, a vibrant maritime promenade, and a bustling night scene. Avilés is a historic gem with one of Spain’s best-preserved medieval centers, contrasted by the futuristic Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre. There's plenty of opportunities for sightseeing in the capital of Oviedo, with a historic old town, 9th-century churches, and bustling university atmosphere.

Restaurants & Bars

The most famous regional dish is fabada which is a rich stew made with the Asturian typical large white beans, pork shoulder, morcilla, chorizo, and saffron. Other major dishes include beans with clams, seafood, Asturian stew and rice pudding for dessert - make sure to try a few local favourites during your visit!

Shopping & Nightlife

Calle Uría (Oviedo) is the premier destination for major international brands and upscale boutiques. Parque Principado (Paredes) offers the largest concentration of retail chains, global stores, and entertainment. Mercado El Fontán (Oviedo) is the top spot for authentic local cheeses, meats, and regional treats. Cider culture is popular in Asturias, with Calle Gascona (Oviedo) and Plaza del Lavaderu (Gijón) offering lively evening atmospheres centered around traditional cider houses. Calle Mon (Oviedo Old Town) features a dense concentration of bars and student-friendly nightlife venues.

Overall Overview

Asturias - officially the Principality of Asturias - is a rugged, fiercely proud region in northwest Spain known for its dramatic landscapes, Celtic roots, and rich culinary traditions. Often called "Green Spain," it stands in stark contrast to the arid plains of the south, offering a mix of towering mountains, wild coastlines, and historic cities. It's well worth a visit on your next trip to Spain!
