The City of Brotherly Love – Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania but with a wonderful small-town feel, you’ll have plenty to do and see with most attractions only a short walk or subway ride away.

Steeped in history as the home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, visitors can’t help but be charmed by the wonderful architecture and quaint neighbourhoods.

If you want to be in the middle of all the action then make sure to stay in Center City. This bustling city centres around City Hall, so by making this area your base will allow easy access to all the main attractions.

Even though a lot of famous sights are within walking distance, the subway is a great affordable way to get around quicker and give your legs a rest at only $2.50 per journey.

 

Food

 

Even the most sophisticated foodie’s will be spoilt for choice with the delectable offerings at the famous Reading Terminal Market. This indoor farmers market has been in operation since 1892 and offers a wide variety of fresh food for any or every meal of the day.

Don’t forget to grab a famous Philly Cheesesteak, this sandwich is world renowned and available on almost every corner but for the original a visit to Pat’s Steaks where Pat himself created the original sandwich in 1930 is a must although friendly competitor Geno’s would argue that their sandwich is superior!

If it’s more of a fine dining experience you are looking for Philadelphia has countless restaurants famed for their cuisine which is sure to impress even the most hard to please diners.

Beer enthusiasts will be sure to enjoy a drink or two in McGillin’s Old Ale House, the oldest continually operating tavern in the city. There are endless options for a fun night out in Philadelphia from the classic dive bars such as Dirty Franks to exclusive cocktail lounges like Hop Sing Laundromat, there’s something for everyone.

While in Philadelphia a comedy show is a must see, there are an array of comedy clubs in the city and shows pop up in many local bars, it’s a fun, slightly different way to spend an evening.

Philadelphia is a shoppers paradise with no tax on shoes and clothes! Rittenhouse Row is where you’ll find all the high street brands. Macy’s Center City is an iconic shopping destination and South Street is the place for local clothing boutiques and vintage shops.

Just outside the city is the second largest mall in America, King of Prussia Mall, visitors will need at least a full day to navigate this shopping haven! For big names at low prices a visit to the Philadelphia Premium Outlets is a must, also located just outside the city.

Philadelphia Museum of Art is the centre of culture with a world renowned collection sure to impress. While visiting be sure to tackle the famous Rocky steps and get a photo with the champ himself!

Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the most famous and expensive prisons ever built, spend a morning exploring the old cells and prison grounds through an entertaining and informative audio guide.

For the sports fan Philadelphia has is all, check-out the Super Bowl winners The Eagles. If basketball is more your thing the 76ers are your team or perhaps you would prefer an afternoon watching the Phillies at a baseball game. Each team has a state of the art stadium within just a short subway ride from the city centre.
