Sharon's Trip to Madrid
By Sharon Martin
I had a fantastic time in Madrid, where we spent four nights in the Tryp Madrid Cibeles hotel right in the city centre. We flew into Madrid airport with Ryanair. This was a great city break with so much nightlife, history, and great restaurants. I don’t think you could ever run out of things to do, and I already can’t wait to go back!
Location
Our hotel, the four-star Tryp Madrid Cibeles, is located just off the Gran Via, which is the main street that runs right through the centre of Madrid. This area couldn’t be more central, as there are hundreds of great shops, restaurants, and bars literally within a 5 or 10-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel couldn’t be beaten for location, and was almost directly across from Callao metro station, one of the main stops in the city. The building itself was both beautiful and modern, and the rooms were very clean and airy.

What I Loved
I had a great time taking the Hop on Hop off bus tour around the city, which cost just €22 for a day ticket and can be bought online or on the bus. There are two routes around the city which show you the historical sites and parks, and we were able to see so much of it from the open top bus in beautiful weather. This was a great way to get to know the city in only a few hours and was definitely my highlight.

Activities & Places to See
- The Real Madrid stadium at El Bernabeu is one of the most popular spots, where we did a great tour of the huge stadium and dressing rooms.
- Madrid has many museums and galleries, such as the famous Museo del Prado which has numerous famous painters' works on display, and the Reina Sofia gallery where we saw Picasso’s famous Guernica painting.
- The Retiro park was a lovely green spot to spend a few hours relaxing and is also just a short metro ride away from the impressive Royal Palace, the official residence of the Spanish royal family.

Shopping
Our hotel was perfectly located for shopping, with loads of shops on the Gran Via itself and on the surrounding streets. We could have spent hours in the Corte Ingles department store, which has 9 floors including a great international food court at the top with panoramic views. There’s also a huge Primark on Gran Via, which was located really close to our hotel.

Food and Bars
There are restaurants in Madrid to suit every budget and taste. I especially loved eating tapas at the San Miguel market. Spanish people love to eat late, so there was always a great atmosphere at around 9 or 10 in the evening. There were loads of bars and clubs around the Gran Via too, and most stay open until early in the morning.
