Samantha's trip to Nova Scotia
By Samantha Buckley
I was lucky enough to get the chance to visit beautiful Nova Scotia, a province located on the east coast of Canada, during a fam trip. During my time here, I visited Halifax, Digby, Yarmouth, White Point Resort and Lunenburg. I flew from Dublin Airport to Halifax with Westjet, which took around 6 hours. The distance from the airport to downtown Halifax was about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic.
Location
Located on the Atlantic Coast, Nova Scotia is a picturesque province which offers both bustling cities and peaceful seaside resorts. It's great for outdoor activities thanks to its array of rolling hills, lush forests and tranquil lakes. The capital of Halifax is a charming harbour city known for its maritime heritage and vibrant cultural scene. Along the scenic South Shore, White Point Resort offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern amenities, set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean's crashing waves. No matter what type of holiday you're looking for, you'll find it in Nova Scotia.
What I Loved
The group of people I travelled with were amazing and made the whole trip. I loved being by myself and meeting new people while travelling through a different country. The history of Nova Scotia, which I didn’t know, was very interesting and the seafood was absolutely amazing.
Activities & Places to See
- Visit the port town of Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Enjoy a wine tasting at Luckett Vineyards.
- Head to the quaint fishing village of Peggy's Cove and see the world-famous Peggy's Cove Lighthouse.
- Go on the Harbour Hopper tour in Halifax , it is similar to the Viking Splash tour in Dublin so you get to see lots during it.
- Check out the Immigration Museum at Pier 21, which was really interesting and full of history and had plenty of visuals.
Bars & Restaurants
Seafood is extremely popular in Nova Scotia thanks to its prime location, so there was no shortage of seafood to be had during my trip! It was absolutely incredible; I tried lobster, oysters, scallops and mussels for the first (but definitely not last!) time. Some of the restaurants I would recommend are: The 5 Fishermen in Halifax, which was my favourite from the whole trip. It's also the most haunted building in Halifax, making a must-see for any horror fans; Luckett Vineyards, where you can enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting followed by a lovely lunch. We had a variety of starters to share and tasty sandwiches while we enjoyed a scenic view of the vineyard; The Old Fish Factory in Lunenburg right at the harbour , where I had the best fish tacos of my life - they were stunning! We didn’t go out much at night as we were so tired after long days but downtown Halifax has a wide variety of bars beside the harbour which is lovely on a sunny day as well as plenty of indoor seating too.
Shopping
In Halifax, there's a shopping centre just a 10 minute drive from the centre which has all the outlet shops. There is also a smaller shopping centre in the town with shops for gifts and makeup. There are plenty of grocery stores in the area too which are perfect for grabbing a snack.
