Maria's Trip to California

California Blog

I spent a week touring California with travel agents from Ireland, Italy, France, and Germany. Each of us followed our own unique itinerary as we explored some of the state’s most iconic destinations, and we all came together on the final day in San Diego. Direct flights with Aer Lingus operate from Dublin to San Francisco and return from Los Angeles to Dublin. It takes around 25 minutes by car to reach San Francisco city centre from the airport. The drive from Los Angeles Airport to downtown is roughly 40 minutes, though traffic can be heavy so extra time is advised.

What I Loved

I really enjoyed visiting the big cities of San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles on this trip. Each had its own distinct character, lively neighbourhoods, and plenty of sights, so I would recommend spending at least two or three days in each to soak in the atmosphere. After exploring the cities, heading to Mariposa and Yosemite was a refreshing change. Both places offered stunning natural scenery, peace, and fresh air, creating a perfect balance between urban excitement and quiet countryside.

Places to See

  • San Francisco: A vibrant city with iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Chinatown. Perfect for cultural experiences and scenic views.
  • Yosemite: A breathtaking national park offering stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and hiking trails. Ideal for nature lovers and outdoor activities.
  • Mariposa: A charming town near Yosemite, known for its historical vibe and peaceful atmosphere. Great for relaxing and enjoying local dining.
  • San Diego: Famous for its beaches, Balboa Park, and the San Diego Zoo, this is a great destination for families and those who love coastal cities.
  • Los Angeles: A dynamic city full of attractions like Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills. Perfect for entertainment, shopping, and cultural experiences.

Activities

In San Francisco, I joined an electric bike tour across the Golden Gate Bridge and returned by ferry, which was a brilliant way to see the city. I also visited the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory and attended the Dear San Francisco show at Club Fugazi, an incredible acrobatic performance that I highly recommend. In Mariposa, we planned to go skydiving but could not due to the weather, though it seems like a fantastic experience. In Yolo County, we enjoyed visiting a local winery.

Overall Overview

California delivers a brilliant balance of lively cities and calming natural beauty. From the cultural energy of San Francisco and Los Angeles to the peaceful scenery of Yosemite and Mariposa, this state suits travellers who enjoy both urban excitement and quiet escapes, offering varied experiences throughout the journey.
