Kate's Trip to Tenerife
By Kate McGillicuddy
A recent Spanish Tourist Board fam trip offered me the chance to explore the beautiful Canary Islands of Tenerife and La Gomera. We flew with Aer Lingus from Dublin to Tenerife South. The trip began with an overnight stay in Los Cristianos before taking the 50 minute ferry to San Sebastián de La Gomera. After two nights in La Gomera, which included visits to Parque Nacional de Garajonay and the picturesque village of Agulo, the journey continued with a short 30 minute flight to Tenerife North. Highlights there included the dramatic mountain village of Masca and the stunning landscapes of the Anaga Mountains. With short transfer times and easy connections between the islands, the trip showed just how simple it is to combine Tenerife and La Gomera into one scenic getaway.
What I Loved
This trip offered plenty to love, with something to offer for everyone regardless of their interests or what kind of holiday you're looking for. It was really good to see another side of Tenerife; it's not all beaches and sun loungers! The island has spectacular mountains, scenic roads, Tinerfeño gastronomy, and some lovely colonial-era towns. Personally, the highlights of my trip were stargazing on Mt. Teide and going on a boat trip to do some whale watching. I'd recommend either to anyone visiting!
Places to See
- La Gomera, the second-smallest of the main islands in Spain’s Canary Island chain, is marked by craggy volcanic mountains crisscrossed with hiking trails. It's a walkers paradise!
- The small town of Garachico is a must visit.
- La Laguna, located in Tenerife North, is another small town that's definitely worth spending a day or so in.
Activities
Tenerife and La Gomera offer a great mix of activities for both relaxation and adventure. In Tenerife, visitors can explore the dramatic mountain scenery around Masca and the Anaga Mountains, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Adeje with its shops, bars and restaurants, or wander through the historic streets of La Laguna. Dining is also a highlight, with excellent local restaurants such as El Patio offering authentic Canarian cuisine. In La Gomera, the slower pace and natural beauty make it ideal for hiking, sightseeing and discovering traditional villages like Agulo, as well as exploring the lush landscapes of Parque Nacional de Garajonay. The island also offers memorable dining experiences, including Tasca Las Cruces and the restaurant at Hotel Gran Rey, both perfect for enjoying local food and island views.
Overall Overview
Overall, the trip provided a fantastic introduction to both Tenerife and La Gomera, highlighting how easily the two islands can be combined in one itinerary. From dramatic mountain landscapes and UNESCO-listed national parks to vibrant towns, traditional villages and excellent local cuisine, each destination offered something unique. With smooth connections between islands and a wide variety of experiences on offer, it was a memorable showcase of the diversity and natural beauty of the Canary Islands.
