Karen's Trip to Lanzarote
By Karen Healy
I have recently returned from my holiday to Lanzarote. We flew direct with Aer Lingus, which took about 4 hours. Ryanair also fly direct but both fly at different times daily. We spent 9 nights in a hotel called Occidental Lanzarote Mar, which belongs to a chain of hotels called Barcelo. From the airport, the hotel is about 10 minutes away by taxi.
Location
The beach and various amenities are only about a 20 minute walk away from the hotel, but taxis are cheap here so that's an option for getting around too! There is a nearby Eurospar within walking distance. The hotel has entertainment daily and also hosts children’s activities in the pool with waterslides, so it's a great hotel to stay in if you are travelling as a family. The hotel was clean and the towels in our room were changed daily.
What I Loved
We decided to go scuba diving which turned out to be great fun for our family. We arranged this locally and had a coach pick us up from our hotel. We were able to get plenty of photos under water with the fish. The duration of the trip was approximately 3 hours. We also decided to go to the Rancho Texas show one of the nights of out trip. This took place in Puerto del Carmen which was easy to get to by taxi. We saw a wild west show and then we had dinner, which was an all you can eat buffet with all you can drink local beer and Sangria! There were a couple of activities in the show which you could participate in which was great fun. Again we booked this locally.
Activities & Places to See
- Visit the Lanzarote volcanoes.
- Take a day-trip to Fuerteventura.
- Enjoy a beach day at one of Lanzarote's many beautiful beaches.
Shopping
There is a small shopping area in Costa Teguise, but if you take a taxi to Puerto del Carmen’s Old Town there is a big shopping centre with lots of high-end shops including Guess and Valentino which sell genuine designe goods. There are also lots of perfumes and make up shops which are very affordable.
Food and Bars
This hotel offers all-inclusive which is convenient for families with smaller children. It was a buffet service with a wide variety of foods each night. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and were great keeping our children entertained. There is lots of nice restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel too if you'd prefer to go out for dinner. You can find lots of bars along the strip.
Beaches
There are lots of really nice beaches in Lanzarote perfect for spending the day sunbathing on. The walk from our hotel down to the beach was really enjoyable, and the beach itself was gorgeous!
