We flew out to Madrid to celebrate my mother’s 70th Birthday on Thursday 29th September with Ryanair. We booked the Hotel Riu Plaza España which is approximately 20 minutes from the airport. It is a gorgeous hotel which is very centrally located, with one of it's main attractions being a very cool rooftop bar.

Location

We stayed at Riu Plaza Espana. I would highly recommend it. The hotel is big and has so much to offer, including a rooftop bar with amazing views over the city of Madrid, an outdoor swimming pool and a gym. The hotel offers one of the best rooftop terrace restaurants in Madrid.

What I Loved

I loved the buzz of the city. When I walked out of my hotel, I felt like I was in New York and then you turn a corner, and you feel like you're in a European city, so I loved the contrast.

Activities & Places to See

  • The Royal Palace (Palacio Real) was less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. This is definitely worth a visit even if you don't go into the palace as there are lovely restaurants and cafes dotted around it and there is a very nice vibe in that area.
  • If you are a foodie a visit to San Miguel Market is a must. There are so many different food options and there's a great buzz around the market.
  • There are loads of plazas in Madrid, but we found Plaza Mayor, right in the heart of the city, to be especially nice. It's lovely for sitting around having a drink and watching the world go by.
  • We spent a lot of our time in Plaza Santa Ana. There's a lot of nice restaurants to choose from around there and there's also a very nice hotel call the Santa Ana where you'll find a very cool & trendy rooftop bar.

Shopping

There are plenty of shopping opportunities all over Madrid. There was a huge Zara at the entrance of our hotel. Gran Via is one of the main shopping streets in Madrid and was only a 5 minute walk from our hotel. No matter what corner you turn you will find a really nice cafe or restaurant to eat in and loads of shops.
