Fiona's Trip to Brussels
By Fiona Flood
We recently spent two nights in Brussels with an excursion to Bruges included. We flew with Ryanair on the 06:00am flight direct to Brussels, where we stayed in the Hilton Brussels City. We took the train from Brussels airport to Brussels Nord train station.
Location
Brussels is a small and easily navigable city, and our hotel was located in the heart of the city at the Place Charles Rogier, just a four-minute walk from Brussels Nord train station. The hotel was a perfect base to see the city from. It is everything you would expect from a Hilton hotel, with a very nice building with large rooms and lovely décor. The city of Bruges was also only a short train ride away and cost €10.

What I Loved
My highlight of the trip was the boat trip we did of the canal around Bruges, a beautiful medieval city. We spent the day there, and the boat was a relaxing way to admire the stunning architecture of the city in nice weather. There are a number of companies that offer these boat tours, including Boottochten Brugge, and it only cost €10 each.

Activities & Places to See
- We loved renting scooters as it was a great way to get around the city and visit places like the Manneken Pis and Jeanneke Pis statues.
- We also participated in a scavenger hunt that we booked through scavengerhunt.com. This was a lot of fun, and was also a great way of getting to see Brussels.
- Try the chip museum in Bruges! It was great to see the history of such a popular food, and you can even get some tasty French fries at the end of the tour.

Shopping
Like many European cities, Brussels has some great places to shop. We loved the Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert, a marketplace with a stunning glass ceiling, as well as the Passage du Nord. Make sure to pick up some Belgian chocolate too! The Anspach Shopping Centre was also a good centre with popular brands located right in the city centre.

Food and Bars
We found some interesting restaurants in Brussels, including Chez Leon, which was very reasonably priced and had really good food. We also tried Baogo, a burger place with an Asian twist on Rue Grétry. Belgium is famous for its beer, and we visited a number of bars to sample the local draughts, although these were a little expensive at times. The city also lacks clubs and doesn’t have a very big nightlife scene.
