Amanda's Trip to Brussels
By Amanda Szabo
I recently went on a city break to Brussels, the capital of Belgium, where I spent a couple of days taking in all the sights and scenes that this beautiful and vibrant city has to offer. I really enjoyed my time here, and can't wait to visit again!
Location
Brussels is a beautiful medieval city, famous for their waffles, chocolates, and comic books. There is plenty of restaurants, outdoor activities, bars, and entertainment to choose from. We stayed in the 4 star NH Collection Brussels Centre Hotel. It is situated close to the Grand Place and the Manneken Pis Statue. This hotel has a nice roof-top terrace with a beautiful panoramic view of the city where breakfast is served, as well as a spacious fitness area and modern and comfortable rooms decorated in a minimal style.
What I Loved
I loved the various chocolate shops around the city, the chocolate from them is so delicious! I also loved the many attractions that the city offers, but I particularly liked Mini Europe; a nice park with mini versions of all of Europe’s main attractions, as well as Atomium, the Grand Place and the funny statue of Manneken Pis.
Activities & Places to See
- See the Grand Place, the heart of the city in the central square of Brussels and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Visit the Cathedral of St. Micheal and St. Gudula. This spectacular Gothic Cathedral is nearly 600 years old, making it one of Brussels' oldest attractions.
- Have fun seeing Manneken Pis, the peeing boy statue which is 400 years old and has been adopted as symbol of Brussels.
- See the Atomium, the symbol of the European capital, which was constructed for the Expo 58 in 1958 and contains an extraordinary museum.
- Pop into the MIMA showcases where you can find everything from graffiti to digital and subculture arts.
- Enjoy the Mont des Arts, the cultural nucleus of the Royal Palace, which houses the prestigious museums and cultural temples like Cinematek and Bozar.
- Have fun visiting Mini-Europe which shows all of Europe’s most famous monuments in miniature size.
Shopping
Brussels is full of shops and local markets that suit all kinds of budgets. The main places in the city centre to find international brands and souvenirs are Les Galeries Royales, next to the Grand-Place. The Rue Neuve is the famous shopping street in Brussels with all the major international brands like Zara, Primark and H&M. The Westland Shopping Centre is one of the most amazing shopping centres as it is home to over one hundred shops and also also holds various events and activities during the year.
Food and Bars
Brussels is full of tasty restaurants, delicious cafés and pubs where you can taste different kinds of beers. We tried Delirium Bar which had lovely food and delicious beers. We also liked De Monk as it had a great, cosy atmosphere and nice Belgian beers. For a snack we loved the Maison Dandoy, a delicious baked-goods shop which has been making amazing waffles and sweets since 1829.
