Phuket is Thailand’s largest island - sitting off the far south of the mainland in the warm, welcoming waters of the Andaman Sea. The island’s history holds a fascinating mix of various eastern and western cultures leading to Phuket developing a multicultural feel and a welcoming nature. There was the almost mandatory European influence in the form of the French and their hunger for the Island’s tin deposits. This tin was mined by Chinese and Indian migrant workers who added immeasurably to the development of the island’s cuisine; the food a traveller will find on the island today is a rich tapestry of many different cultural influences intertwined for centuries in isolation – leading to a genuinely unique culinary experience.

The main tourist spots are located on the west coast of the island which has some dangerously beautiful beaches. There are many resorts and options on this long stretch of shoreline, the most popular of which being Patang beach and its surrounding infrastructure. In Thai Patang literally translates as “the forest filled with banana leaves” though today it is more of a forest of neon and concrete – but if it’s a roaring nightlife you’re looking for you need look no further than this few square kilometres of nightclubs, bars and shops.

The island also caters for those more family orientated travellers, or those who simply want to chill out on a deserted beach. Sirin and Bang Tao beaches offer that remote, paradisiacal refuge for those who want to escape the hoards, and anyone would be hard pushed to find a better place to do it. Phuket is a spectacular place for anyone to visit whether you’re a raver looking for the session of the year, or the more relaxed type simply looking for your own slice of paradise.
