Up until the late 1970’s the island of Koh Samui was an unknown backwater that barely registered on the maps; it had little infrastructure and no roads whilst it took more than a day to hack through the island’s mountainous central jungles to make the fifteen kilometre trip to the far side. Though that all began to change as the slow drip of wandering hippies gradually turned into a steady flow of tourists and revellers - changing the fate of the island from poverty stricken coconut and rubber exporter to a veritable Mecca for western youth looking for a wild time.

The old centre of the island is a fishing village called Nathon on the island’s west coast, it is a charming little town and is the centre of commerce for the island’s native Samuis. Aside from this the tourist amenities surrounding the main beaches have become towns in their own right and offer anything a traveller could ask for on a relaxing sun holiday. The beaches are nothing short of spectacular, offering the archetypal ideal of paradise with views over deep turquoise waters and meandering archipelagos of lush islands stretching out to the horizon.

Most people come to Koh Samui for a mixture of relaxing on those pristine beaches and partying the warm nights away in a contented haze. The weather is sunny almost all year round – the island gladly being omitted from the usual six month wet monsoon season – so voyages out to Koh Samui are advisable all year round. The party scene is relentless and there will always be a session as long as there are a hardy few who are up for it. The main beaches are respectively Cheweng and Lamai and are not advisable if looking for a quiet night in.

The most famous event in the party calendar is the monthly full moon party in the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan. A quick thirty minute ferry journey will takes thousands of party goers to the even more remote Koh Phangan for this almost primal celebration of the lunar cycle; this is a chance for everyone to lose themselves for a night by indulging in buckets (literally) of all manner of alcohol and getting amongst some fantastic techno and drum & base. I wont go as far as to say this island has something for everyone but if it’s a mixture of adventure, serious partying and spectacular beaches you’re after don’t hesitate to explore this incredible place.
