Things to do in a Week in Croatia

Croatia is a fast-growing destination for Irish holiday makers and there are lots of great reasons why! You can now fly direct to 5 cities in Croatia direct from Dublin.  These are Zagreb, the capital city which is inland in the north of the country, Pula on the coast of Istria in the north-west and Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik which are all in Dalmatia, the long, thin strip of beautiful coastline in the middle and south of the country.

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is a wonderful example of a medieval castle.  The town is surrounded by massive, impregnable walls which tower over the town. It’s no wonder Dubrovnik was an independent republic for 500 years!  You can circumnavigate the town by walking along these walls which give a great view of the town below and the Adriatic Sea.

A walking tour of the city is a must do on a visit to the Old Town. After finishing, a great place to stop for refreshments is Cafe Buja, a small bar hanging from a precipice outside the city walls and has one of the best views over the Adriatic.

There are museums and churches and other places of interest within the Old Town which are worth a visit. You can take a boat trip to nearby Lokrum Island, kayak in the azure blue waters beside the castle or take a cable car to the top of Mount Srđ for an amazing view.  There’s also a museum here relating to the 1991-1995 war and its impact on the city.

Dubrovnik Old Town

If you’re staying any distance from the Old Town, the public buses are very good and cheap.

If you’ve more time in Dubrovnik, a boat trip to the island of Korcula is a real must-do.

Walking tour of Split. One of the last Roman emperors, Diocletian, built a retirement palace in this beautiful seaside town between 295 and 305AD. While much of the original palace has been converted to other uses over the centuries, the gigantic basement halls are virtually intact and give a great insight into how impressive the original palace must have been.

The Riva: This is the beautiful waterfront and is a great place to chill out  you can visit the near-by islands from here, including the very popular Hvar and Brac. The Riva

Day trip to Mostar in Bosnia-Hercegovina.  You can do some great day trips from Split, including Mostar which is about 3 hours away, over the border in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Like Dubrovnik and Split, Mostar is a UNESCO World Heritage town. Its famous 16th century bridge, which rises 25m over the river, is the focal point of the town.  It was destroyed in the 1990s war but rebuilt and unveiled with great fanfare in 2004.

Mostar Bridge

This trip is usually twinned with a trip to the spectacular Krka waterfalls, the pilgrimage site of Medjugorje or Plitvice lakes.

Day Trip to Trogir -  This is another beautiful town on the coastline near Split and you can get a boat from Split which takes roughly 90 minutes. The historic St Lawrence’s Cathedral is located in this town square and is famous for its Romanesque door, carved in 1240. There are regular boat trips in high season to Trogir from the waterfront (Riva) in Split.

St. Dominus Cathedral

Split to Dubrovnik or Vice Versa: You can go by bus or by boat.  The road journey which is circa 225km, hugs the Dalmatian coastline which is absolutely spectacular from start to finish.  Both bus and boat take roughly 4 hours, but the bus is about half the price of the boat. If travelling by bus, make sure to have your passport ready as there is a border crossing with Bosnia-Herzegovina on route.
