Things to do in North Cyprus

By Sharlene Hogan

North Cyprus

Golden sand and sheltered bays surrounded by crystal clear water, Northern Cyprus is a paradise. I was lucky enough to spend 5 nights here recently. I visited Kyrenia, Famagusta and Nicosia. Each location had something different to offer but they were equally stunning.

Location

Kyrenia was the first stop, its dazzling old harbours made for a beautiful setting. I made myself at home in the 5-Star Acapulco Resort Convention Spa Hotel. This accommodation is only 25 minutes from the airport and a 15-minute walk into the town, the perfect location. The service here is truly 5-Star, the pool is to die for and the slides are great fun.

I also stayed in the 5-Star Noah’s Ark Deluxe Hotel & Casino in Nicosia and the stunning Korineum Golf & Beach Resort in Famagusta. Both properties were stunning, and the service was fabulous! However, if you aren’t keen on changing hotels, I would recommend staying in Kyrenia and doing day trips to Nicosia and Famagusta.

What I Loved

I just loved, crossing the border and spending some time in Nicosia. The vibrant street life, unique culture and fascinating history was just some of the things the city had to offer. The street art here is so creative, I could spend hours admiring it. The locals really made the holiday too, they were so welcoming and friendly.

Activites and Places to See

• A boat trip around Kyrenia is a must! I did this on my last day, the scenery was breath taking.

• You won’t regret a day trip to Famagusta. This place is steeped in history, ancient architecture is dotted all over the town. There are also stunning secluded beaches.

North Cyrpus Holiday

• The views from St. Hilarion Castle are some of the best in Kyrenia. However, there are a lot of steps, so bear this in mind if you are travelling with an elderly person.

• Walk along the top of Kyrenia Castle walls, another great viewpoint! While at the castle visit the Ship Wreck Museum found inside. The remains of the wreck are fascinating.

Shopping

Shopping in Northern Cyprus was very cheap! However, if you’re looking for high street brands, I would recommend visiting Nicosia as the shops here are a lot more commercialised.  I spotted Bershka, Mango and even a Debenhams!

Food and Bars

The food in Northern Cyprus was to die for, they certainly know how to cook! Hurma Restaurant, Kyrenia was one of my favourites. The staff were so welcoming, and the views were amazing. I recommend ordering the mezze, this is similar to tapas, so you get to try a bit of everything.

Bellapais Gardens Restaurant is another great spot for food and unbelievable views. I recommend trying their wine, which they make themselves!

Beaches

I loved Acapulco beach, which is owned by the hotel. The beach has a wide range of facilities from sun loungers and umbrellas to water sports and even a night club.

North Cyprus Holiday

A North Cyprus holiday has cultural and historical elements that a typical sun holiday destination doesn’t. It was the perfect combination of relaxation, education and adventure. Whether you’re a sun worshipper, a history lover or a newlywed couple looking for some romance, Northern Cyprus has something for everyone!
